W Division Recap Week 1
by Jack Liu
Lincoln High_The women's division kicked off the summer season
with three blowouts of 16-point margins or more-clearly defining a line
between the super-competitive W teams and the less experienced. Though
more blowouts are expected, there will be games worth watching once the
top teams face each other or when the lower seeds meet.
Sunset Baptist 13-39
FCBC
7-18
Sunset Baptist started the game slow while First
Chinese Baptist women kept the game close in the first half with their
scrappy defense and intensity. However, the talented Sunset team began
to click in the second half and pulled away by using their pressure
defense and quickness to force many turnovers that led to fast breaks
and easy baskets.
SF Mandarin 25-52
Golden Gate 6-19
SF Mandarin with its talented and veteran group
rattled the young Golden Gate team with its full-court press early
and built a big lead heading into half time. Trailing by large
margin, Golden Gate, however, continued to play with energy and
enthusiasm and their offense responded much better in the second
half. In the end, SF Mandarin proved to be too much for the inexperienced
Golden Gate squad.
Harvest 26-37
Holy Ground 26-21
Harvest Bookstore (formerly P.D.S.T in 2004) showed
why it was the W division champs last year with a solid win over Holy
Ground. Harvest built a huge lead going into the second half with its
man-to-man pressure and fast break buckets. With many players who are
still trying to get familiar with each other, Holy Ground's rustiness
showed in the first half. However, HGF played much more poised and
in sync as a team in the second half. HGF made a push with some late
baskets but Harvest was able to make some timely jumpers to prevent
the comeback.
